At the start of every new year, people around the world take advantage of the fresh start and make New Year’s Resolutions to improve their lives. In the U.S., about 60% of Americans report making New Year’s Resolutions.
Common resolutions include improving physical health, making better financial choices, consuming less alcohol, traveling more, and spending more time with friends and family.
But despite the desire to make positive changes, only about 8% of Americans who make New Year’s Resolutions actually achieve their goals.
If you’re starting to consider your resolutions for 2020, consider a resolution that focuses on service. This is a resolution that can be a positive part of your life for years to come.
There are benefits to increased community service that can help you achieve in other areas as well. These include: giving you a sense of purpose, creating a network, developing a new skill, and so many more.
How YWA Can Support Your Community Service Goals
By definition, a resolution is a firm decision to do or not do something. But when it comes to New Year’s Resolutions, those firm decisions often end up on shaky ground by February.
There are a ton of articles and books out there that can guide you through how to keep a resolution. But it mostly boils down to a few “easy” steps:
- Start with simple, achievable changes.
- Stay optimistic.
- Be self aware.
If you choose to make “more community service” your resolution in the coming year, how can YWA help you be a part of the 8% of resolutions that are successfully achieved? Here are some common challenges in performing more community service, and how volunteering through YWA makes it easier.
“It is difficult to find opportunities to volunteer.”
YWA creates opportunities for you to serve with fellow members. With three to five volunteer events with YWA every month, there is no shortage of opportunity to sign up. All YWA volunteer opportunities are on the Events page on the YWA website.
“It is difficult to go to a volunteer event where I don’t know anyone.”
When you volunteer at a YWA event, it is guaranteed that you will be volunteering with at least one other member of YWA. Volunteer events are a great place to meet other YWA members.
“I don’t have enough time” or “Volunteer schedules are too inflexible.”
YWA plans volunteer events with a 9 to 5 work schedule in mind. All volunteer events are on the weekends or after work on weekdays.
