Murphy Larson, a YWA member for 6 months, sat down with me and explained her volunteer experience with Dress for Success.
Dress for Success is a nonprofit that has a mission to empower women to achieve economic independence by preparing them for the work-world with professional attire, job training and a network of support.
Larson is an Image Consultant for the organization, which means she helps clients find a stylish, well fitted and job appropriate professional outfit in the Dress for Success Boutique as well as shoes, a hand bag, jewelry and cosmetics.
“It’s been a really good volunteering experience,” Larson said. “It has helped me to continue to be thankful for my job.”
She has worked with about 10 different women so far, each a different experience.
As she recalled a story of one client who couldn’t decide on an outfit, she remembered the fulfilling moment when the woman finally looked in the mirror and said “I look good…I got this,” and proceeded to give Larson a hug.
“Clothes help you feel confident,” Larson said. “They help you get a job, but they also effect people’s confidence.”
Dress For Success needs volunteers like Larson as well as donations of plus size women’s clothing. Larson explained that majority of the women that she has helped needed plus size clothing which the Boutique has a limited supply of.
“I encourage people to volunteer in their interest,” she said. “Volunteering is volunteering. Everyone has different motivations for doing things, but if you have the time to go out to eat, you can volunteer once a month.”
