4 Benefits of Joining a YWA Committee

The Young Women’s Alliance is a resource for women who are looking to expand their horizons professionally and personally. Within this organization, there are many opportunities to do so; helpful workshops, volunteer events, even virtual “Wine-d Down” meetups for those who want to just chill with some cool ladies and have a drink! Another invaluable option to expand your skill set and meet people is joining a committee.

Not only do committees give you the opportunity to spend time with the same group of women on a regular basis, but they also open the door for you to learn and grow with those women. With a plethora of topics, from finance to event planning, there’s a committee for everyone!

Here are four fantastic benefits of joining a YWA committee:

Explore and learn more about a desired topic in a safe, nurturing environment.

It can be hard to find the tools and motivation to grow your skills, or even learn new ones, on your own. By joining a committee, you’ll be able to explore new skills without the pressure of something like a new job. You’ll get guidance from your fellow committee members. Maybe you’ll even fall in love with a topic you never thought to explore, and change your career path because of it! YWA committees are all about fostering growth. If you’re looking to build up a skill or just broaden your horizons, this is a great starting point.

Committees are a great way to socialize and make connections with a cool group of ladies!

We all know how much connections matter – and how hard it is to make friends sometimes in this day and age (especially during Covid). Kill two birds with one stone and give yourself the opportunity to make friends AND connections that could help you in your future career. Personal growth is just as important as professional growth!

Committee work helps you build up your resume.

There’s no denying that simply being a part of an organization that uplifts women and is rooted in bettering the Austin community is good resume bling. Being in a committee can be even better! We all know how hard it is to stand out in a pile of applicants. Being on a committee shows a company that you’re serious about (1) the Austin community (2) continuing education, and (3) building connections.

Joining a committee can help you give back to your community.

You may not be directly volunteering at the East Texas Food Bank, or one of the many other organizations YWA volunteers for. That’s okay! Being on a committee – even if it’s not community service – is still working towards giving back to the Austin community. Every committee plays a part in making sure that YWA is kept up and running so that we’re able to do things like volunteer and raise money to give away our yearly scholarships!

What else?

We list only four benefits to joining a committee here, but there are so many more! Committees play a vital role to the running of this important organization. Plus, they’re a great way for you to explore what else is out there for you as a member. Your involvement can be as little or as much as you want- you aren’t signing a contract to work X amount of hours a week. Committees create a comfortable space to help YWA, and allow you to meet some like-minded ladies. After all, we’re all trying to forge connections in a big (and sometimes overwhelming) city!
