The Young Women’s Alliance invited Kim Caldwell to speak at our Monthly Speaker Series event on July 17th.
Kim opened the event by talking about the power of storytelling. In her words, stories “stick, sell, and spur action”. To illustrate this, Kim shared a personal story of transitioning into her first job out of college at a local non-profit and feeling like a fish out of water.
When asked how Kim’s story made them feel, the audience responded with words like “empowered”, “nostalgic”, and “vulnerable”.
During the event, attendees chose a value and partnered with their neighbors to tell each other their own personal stories.
Afterwards, one audience member shared, “You don’t usually get a chance to really get to know someone at these events, but I felt like I did this time.”
One brave soul, Anna Sullivan, came up and told her inspiring story about self-respect and overcoming gender discrimination at a previous job. While the experience was devastating at the time, it motivated her to leave her job and start her own company, Real Food Bar.
Kim ended the event with a few key takeaways for the audience:
- Tailor your story to your audience
- Know your purpose, know why you’re telling a story
- PRACTICE
Thank you to Kim Caldwell for speaking at our July Speaker Series!
